Before You Finish a Basement: 5 Things to Check First

Five things to check before you finish a basement. From Norcon Home Solutions, White Bear Lake.

An unfinished basement is a blank slate, but a few checks before the framing starts can save you trouble later. Here is what to look at first.

1. Look for signs of moisture

Walk the basement with a flashlight. Check the floor, the base of the walls and the corners for stains, white mineral residue, a musty smell or damp spots. Anything you find is worth sorting out before walls and flooring cover it up.

2. Decide how you will use the space

A rec room, a home office and a guest suite each need different things. Think about who will use the space and how often, and the layout, storage and outlets will follow from that.

3. Find your utilities

Note where the furnace, water heater, panel, shutoffs and floor drain sit. These are hard to move, so the plan usually works around them, and you will want access to the ones you need to reach.

4. Think about light

Basements often have few windows, so plan lighting in layers: overhead lights, plus lamps or task lighting where you read or work. Light-colored finishes help a lower space feel more open.

5. Plan for a bathroom early

If you might want a bathroom now or later, mention it at the start. Planning the plumbing while the space is open is easier than adding it afterward.
